After completing Umrah, many pilgrims travel on to Madinah to visit the Prophet’s Mosque. The journey between the two holy cities is one of the most important legs of the trip, and a little planning makes it far more comfortable.
Distance and travel time
The road distance between Makkah and Madinah is about 450 km. By car, the journey usually takes around four and a half to five hours, depending on traffic and how many stops you make.
Plan your stops
A long drive is easier with a break. Let your driver know if you would like to stop for prayer, food or rest. Most travellers make one or two short stops along the highway.
Choosing the right vehicle
- Sedan: Suitable for small groups with a few suitcases.
- Family van: More space for families, children and extra luggage.
- Minibus or coach: The best value for larger groups travelling together.

Road or train?
The Haramain High-Speed Railway connects Makkah and Madinah and is quicker between stations. A private road transfer, however, takes you from your hotel door in Makkah to your hotel door in Madinah, with no station transfers and no carrying bags through terminals. For families and groups with luggage, that convenience often matters most.
